DIY Fluted Molding Hack

If I can do it anybody can!

Molded furniture is bang on trend but SO expensive. I decided to have a go at doing my own little hack! I bought some pine molding strips from B&Q. Each strip measures 2400 mm in length, so you can roughly work out how many you will need by measuring the front of your drawers or cabinet where you want to put the molding. I'd recommend that you buy some extra for wastage. They were quite cheap at £2.40 each or so. You can buy the molding in different sizes, as you can see the width I chose is 14mm x 6mm.

You can see they're a D shape. So plenty of surface to stick whilst keeping the lovely fluted front forward.

By far the quickest way to cut the strips is using a mitre saw. I'd never used one before!

Or you can use a hack saw and a mitre box. I did the first few with the hack saw and then moved on to the mitre saw to save time. I allowed for wastage when I bought the strips. B&Q will always refund you any returns so better to get too many than not enough!

Next I lined up the cut strips onto the cabinet drawers to make sure I was happy with the lengths. At this point you can sand down any rough edges using sand paper.

I then glued the strips on using wood glue. I used some I already had in the shed. Any wood glue will do. I did this part whilst the drawers were in the cabinet. This is because it's a very old piece of furniture and the drawers aren't straight, so I had to adjust the strips to make them even. If it was a modern piece of furniture you could stick the strips on whilst the drawers were out if you find it easier.

And now for the pretty bit! I used some paint I had left over from another project, which is Skimming Stone by Farrow and Ball.

This needed a second coat but I couldn't resist trying the new gold handles for size. I got the handles from Amazon. A bargain at 6 for £10.00!

Final coat done and ....TA DA!

For reference, this was the cabinet before I gave it the fluting treatment! I loved it....but I love it more now!
